and wanted to know why I can't insert my own video to display only shows the paperclip and file name and that is uber disappointing, but I am new to this so asking as I am probably missing something, or I wasted my money 🙁

The wpForo Embeds add-on designed and work in the following way. The add-on allows embed hundreds of video, social network, audio and photo content providers(not from local)in forum topics and posts. In the screenshot provided below, you can see all allowed content providers:
