I try and embed an article I want to share with people. For instance:

what I'm wanting is to embed the actual article - not the link to the article. Is this possible? I have both embed and advanced attachments.

Could you please make sure the "oEmbed current domain content" option is enabled. The option is located on Dashboard > Forums > Settings > Addons > Embeds admin page.
The option allows embedding current domain blog contents.
