In other words, if I made changes to a comment written by a commenter, is there an add-on that would enable me to restore the original version?

The developers can create a custom addon for you. However, it'll start to work only for the commenters made after the addon installation. In other words, for old comments, it won't work.
We have plugin customization and custom addon development services at the gVectors Team. They can assess the work and create it for you if you want.
