Is there anyway to show the user the upload status of their photos or a loading icon at all without having to click on the 'My Media'

Hi @magdalena,
Could you please disable the "Attachment Dialog Auto Upload" option and check again. Probably that''s what you need.
The option is located in the Dashboard > Forums > Settings > Addons > Attachment admin page.
