Using custom fields option, I want to add a checkbox fields with one default value selected.
There is an option "Display default values?" in the dialog box when creating the custom field.
How can I enable this option to work?

You should use the square brackets, i. e. the default value option should be enclosed with the [] brackets. See the screenshot below:
Also please note: You should also enable the "Is Required?" option, to get it to work.
