We would like to introduce the function of displaying the name of the commenter being replied to in a threaded discussion - is this possible?

We don't follow you well, I'd suggest you check out the wpDiscuz Widget Addons. The add-on has the following tabs:
- Most Voted Comments
- Active Comment Threads
- Most Commented Posts
- Active Commenters
- Recent Comments
I guess the MOST ACTIVE COMMENTERS tab is what you need, right?
