Hello,
First of all, looks like a very promising plugin! The issue is that when a comment is left, the comment is posted only once, however Buddypress notifications show two comments each time. So for some reason, submitting one comment is triggering two as far as BP is concerned. Any ideas what might cause this?

I'm sorry but I have no idea why BP does this. Try to find some solution with BP support.
