Hi weichieh,
Please navigate to Dashboard > Settings > Discussion admin page, Disable "Avatar Display" option.

I just found that disabling avatars in Settings - Discussion also removes the avatar from my author box. Is there another way?

I'm sorry, but it is not possible to disable avatars for comments only yet. We'll take it into consideration to find some solution for this.
