I have seen most of the other plugins have been updated, a major update at that, so I am wondering if this embeds plugin is also updated? If not, then does it still work and capable of these major updates? Thanks!

Sure, the current version of the wpDiscuz plugin and the Embed add-on version are compatible, so you can use it without any worries.
