Do I need to purchase an addon to fix this?

No, the issue shouldn't have any relation to add-ons. Both wpDiscuz and wpForo plugins work fine without add-ons. It'd be easy for us to check the issue if you provide us some example URL.

As a sidenote, I deactivated our cache plugin (WP Rocket), and deleted all caches.

No. installed wpDiscuz Version 5.3.2

This kind of problem is usually caused by a conflict other plugins. Please deactivate plugins one by one and check after each deactivation. 

Tried it. Didn't work. I guess I will have to search for another commenting plugin. Thanks for trying.
