Hello hello,
In our situation, we have the best forum platform together with the best comments platform provided by the same company. What’s even better, the two are (more or less today) integrated via the Cross-posting addon. This is one of the greatest functionalities that make wpForo so far ahead of any other solution. Cross-posting means also mirroring the comments stream (wpDiscuz) and the corresponding wpForo topic stream.
Already having wpForo with Cross-posting, I’m studying the wpDiscuz addons and functionalities.
Because it seems that several functionalities are different from one to another, I’m asking you about their detailed compatibility and convergence strategy.
- wpDiscuz Media Uploader – is it everything compatible (display-wise) with wpForo Embeds, and vice-versa ?
- wpDiscuz Advanced Likers. How will it translate to wpForo, knowing that wpForo has only “Like” possibility ? wpDiscuz has “Like/Dislike”.
- wpDiscuz Emoticons. wpForo is using Emojis. Why different system ? What is the compatibility today and the convergence plan ?
- wpForo Polls. How do they display in wpDiscuz ? Same for wpForo User Custom Fields.
- wpDiscuz Private Comments. Is it synchronized with the Private reply of wpForo ?
- wpDiscuz Frontend Moderation – is it already synchronized with the corresponding forum post ? What about the wpForo moderators ? Beside all this, what is happening with the different editing options ? wpForo has its plethoric own, while wpDiscuz has only “Allow comment editing for N time”.
- the arborescent wpDiscuz discussion is mirrored linearly in wpForo topic, ordered by the time of the post. The wpForo linear discussion cannot mirror arborescence in wpDiscuz stream. Still, wpForo would have a corresponding arborescence option which is Quote. Converging plans ?
I suppose it is not a simple matter to converge the two, or even to have a strategic decision regarding it. Because wpForo Cross-posting addon is not replacing the comments stream from the roots of commenting a post, today wpDiscuz and wpForo are poised to be used concomitantly. I was wondering, why not a wpForo option to replace completely the comment stream with wpForo system ? I mean kind of embedded wpForo topic instead of today comments. Then, it wouldn’t be necessary to converge wpDiscuz with wpForo as they would be different choices for alternative use.
Thank you for advices, have a nice day.
Hello again, please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts on the wpDiscuz / Cross-posting forum topics coexistence today and into the future. It would help us a lot to build our website accordingly.
Thank you UsernameMi
What’s even better, the two are (more or less today) integrated via the Cross-posting addon.
Please note, that wpForo Cross-posting addon is not a wpForo - wpDiscuz integration solution. This addon is not created for integration and it doesn't have any integration function. This addon is made to automatically post Blog Posts as Forum Topics and Comments as Forum Replies. It does nothing else. You should not search integration function in this addon.
wpDiscuz Media Uploader – is it everything compatible (display-wise) with wpForo Embeds, and vice-versa ?
If you have wpDiscuz Media Uploader and wpForo Embeds addon then all embeded videos will be available on both sides. Also, there are a small dependence on addon.
wpDiscuz Advanced Likers. How will it translate to wpForo, knowing that wpForo has only “Like” possibility ? wpDiscuz has “Like/Dislike”.
I'm sorry but they'll not be synced. As I've already mentioned above the crossposting addon doesn't integrate these plugin functions it only posts content from one system to another.
wpDiscuz Emoticons. wpForo is using Emojis. Why different system ? What is the compatibility today and the convergence plan ?
I'm sorry but there is no any compatibly here yet. wpDiscuz Emoticons are images not Emoji. These images will not work on wpForo posts. However wpForo Emojies should work on wpDiscuz comments because Emoji is an universal content, it works on all places.
wpForo Polls. How do they display in wpDiscuz ? Same for wpForo User Custom Fields.
They have no any relation to comment system. They are only developed for forum system.
wpDiscuz Private Comments. Is it synchronized with the Private reply of wpForo ?
This is not integrated too.
wpDiscuz Frontend Moderation – is it already synchronized with the corresponding forum post ? What about the wpForo moderators ? Beside all this, what is happening with the different editing options ? wpForo has its plethoric own, while wpDiscuz has only “Allow comment editing for N time”.
As far as I remember approving/editing and deleting features are synchronized for cross-poted content. And the synchronization can be turned on/off in the addon settings (Forums > Settings >Addons > Crossposting Tab).
the arborescent wpDiscuz discussion is mirrored linearly in wpForo topic, ordered by the time of the post. The wpForo linear discussion cannot mirror arborescence in wpDiscuz stream. Still, wpForo would have a corresponding arborescence option which is Quote. Converging plans ?
We're working on new wpForo Layout called Threaded Layout. This will reflect the comment hierarchy in near future.
We're working hard to make wpForo and wpDiscuz integrated as much as possible. At this point there is no integration yet. We'll add integration functions in core plugins (wpForo and wpDiscuz), These functions will not be Cross-Posting addon functions, because the Cross-posting addon is not developed for wpForo and wpDiscuz integration, it's only developed for post and comment content synchronization in both systems.
Hello, thank you Tom for the detailed answers.
You are mentioning efforts “to make wpForo and wpDiscuz integrated as much as possible”.
Does this means that in the ideal long term, Cross-Posting addon will be surpassed by the convergence between the two ?
What about my concept of having one day an embedded forum topic directly as comments list ? The upcoming “Threaded layout” seems to facilitate this. But this would mean that wpDiscuz won’t be necessary anymore if we have wpForo, right ?
Even if as developers, you are not calling Cross-Posting addon an integration plugin, from the user perspective it is how it looks, at least conceptually 🙂 The refinement of this tool will have a decisive impact on any site searching for integration. It combines alone no less than three big important entities: portal post, comments and forum. You can be sure that users will ask to transit more information than text and images – 90s era internet – between the three, especially that it is a premium plugin. That’s why I think that sooner or later the power of this “integration” idea/plugin will be decisive.

I'm sorry but I didn't follow you. If you meant the "integration", I can say it for sure, that this addon will not do plugin integration things. All planned integration functions will be added in wpDiscuz or in wpForo according to UX means.

I'm really sorry but this is not possible, because forum threads are not WordPress custom post types, they cannot have comment system attached. We can't load comment system (comment form with threads) in topic and forum topic system (post editor and topic replies) under WordPress post. They are totally different content types, the only way is already implemented by cross-posting.
The upcoming threaded layout of wpForo is another forum layout with hierarchical threads of replies like comment threads. This will be close to reddit style. We're getting many suggestions by our users to have such a layout so we're going to add it. This layout will not have an option to load comment system in forum thread.

Sure, I see you what you mean. There are many thing that the cross-posting addon can have. For example we're planing to add the "like/vote" synchronization and private statuses between wpDiscuz and wpForo. And lots more that can be tracked as integration too. But the main integration functions will be added in core plugins not in addon.
Hi and thank you for the insights. It allows us to better understand and prepare our configuration. And what we heard about development plans sounds so good!
One more thing. That duality Emoji/Emoticons, while I don't understand how the same company can develop two incompatible smiley system, I must ask if you plan to do something in this regard. Smileys are nowadays omnipresent in written exchanges and it is shocking to lose them once we switch from comments to forum via Cross-posting - all this while staying inside the gVectors ecosystem.

If using wpForo with Blog Cross Posting and myCRED, does posts made on blog discussion count toward points for myCRED on wpForo? The cross posting would essentially make a post on the forum when posting replies on blog discussion.
How would using myCRED on both Foro and Discuz work?
