GDPR is the biggest privacy law ever to hit the world. Anybody handling data from EU citizens hast to stick to it. Among other things it states that you need sufficient permission and consent to store something like a name, email and IP address (e.g. when someone makes a comment). Easiest thing to get this out of the way and be on the save side: A simple "I have read, understand and accepted the privacy policy (link)." checkbox the user has to check before submitting a comment.
Several people asked for GDPR compliance of WP Discuz and every time you answer something along the lines that the software would be too bloated if you put in every single requests like these. But GDPR compliance is not any request. It is a big thing effecting the entirety of Europe and potentially the whole world since the data of every person residing in the EU has to be protected by this law.
The other thing you state is that you have a hook for said checkbox. You even link to a plugin that someone is selling for 50 Euros per month(!). I am not that tech savy so I can't do that myself... and also - and this is the most important point - I do trust add-ons for WP Discuz more if they would come directly from you. I know that you know your plugin inside out, that you do good work and that you keep everything updated. Why would you not just offer that add-on yourself, sell it for $5-$10 and give your EU customers peace of mind.
I have so much other headaches around that annoying law, I don't want abandoning the best commenting plugin in the world to be another one of these. All my customers have WP Discuz installed (some of which use a couple of paid add-ons). I would rather not rely on a third-party to get this simple checkbox that every single EU website needs now.
Thank you for your time and attention. Please think about offering an add-on to help with this problem.
Hi Ferdinand,
We're not planning to add this yet. I'll ask our team to take this under consideration.
