Default selection blank for dropdown field?

I want a dropdown field required during registration but not a default selection. For other field builders, I could have it show --choose selection-- or something similar. This way if they submit the form with --choose selection-- still the default selection, it will kick it out. is there a way to do that with user custom fields?
