Hello,
We have many authors on our site, some get just a few comments and others get thousands!
We would like a method to allow a post author to subscribe to their own posts by checking a box in the post editor before it is published. This way, if a post author wants to be notified of comments for a specific article they can check the box to subscribe.
Is that possible?

Yes, I know that is the official solution.
The way it's setup now fills the inbox of a couple of our authors to the point they can't use their email program.

That turns the option on for ALL authors, not individual authors
As far as I know, if the option is turned on WordPress also sends an email notification to the current post author about new comments.

wpDiscuz has "Subscribe to all comments of this post" option, so the post author can easily subscribe to the current article. Please read this doc:
