uh.... i was under the impression that rank badges would be provided with the mycred integration plugin. is this not the case?
if not, any advice on making a good badge system similar to some awesome forum ranks or other relative rank systems?

Yes, you can do that with myCRED plugin and wpDiscuz myCRED Integration addon.
Please make sure myCRED plugin is installed:

- Navigate to WordPress Dashboard > Points > Hooks admin page and activate wpDiscuz panel (drag and drop), then configure all point awarding options.
- Then navigate to Dashboard > Points > Addons and activate Badges.
- Then navigate to Dashboard > Points >Badges and configure badges depended on Number Comments and Like/Dislikes.
