I'm trying to figure out a way to make the start a comment and leave a reply placeholder phrase different. 

I understand that we can change the phrase for a brand new comment on a page, but I'm trying to change (or remove if I can't change) Just the placeholder text that appears in the box after you click reply. 

I searched the forum but couldn't find a solution. Thanks.

You can change this phrase in Dashboard > Comments > Phrases > Form admin page.
