RE: Comment sort order at the lowest thread level

At the lowest thread level, where there are no more nested thread replies, we'd like to be able to have those comments sorted in some sort of chronological order, so that they can be followed logically and chronologically. Now, if any comment is replied to on the lowest level, the reply comment inserts directly below it. If multiple replies to multiple messages are posted at the lowest thread level, the conversation becomes almost impossible to follow. We'd like comments at the lowest thread level to sort in chronological order (preferably oldest first, even though the top thread level sorts newest first), not in order of who responded to who. I'm confused as to why it just doesn't go chronological as default comments do? It's really confusing.
