Can you please change it so we can upload our own, font awesome is nice and all but very bland, would be good to be able to upload our own custom forum icons!
Are there any current workarounds?

I'm really sorry but there is no way to upload your own topic icons.
However, we suggest you check out the following support topic, here the wpforo members provide some CSS solutions: https://wpforo.com/community/how-to-and-troubleshooting-2/replace-font-awesome-icons-with-images/
