Is it possible to assign users a default avatar instead of having a blank space when users do not create their own avatar ?

Blank space?
WordPress inserts no-avatar image Avatar when user doesn't have avatar. Make sure WP avatars is not disabled. And you can choose one of WP avatars for people w/o avatars in the same admin page - Dashboard > Settings > Discussions
