No formatting -- all one paragraph with no rich text

Hello, when someone sends a private message with formatting (paragraphs, bold text, links, etc.) it is displayed in the edit field with that formatting.  When they submit it, the formatting is stripped and everything is in one paragraph.  However, the email that is sent retails all of the formatting perfectly.  Is there a quick fix to retain it in the front end, too?  Thanks!
