Is it possible to add an ajax feature to the pm add on? SO it automatically updates and the pages doesn't need refreshing when a new message is posted.
This could turn it into more of a live chat function and not just a pm function?

This will change the PM to a chat application. Also, the live update requires frequent AJAX request to WordPress and server, this will kill your website performance for sure.
We've already tested some live features on WordPress and dedicated servers. This always bring overloading of the system and website goes down. I'm sorry, but we are not planning to add such feature in wpForo addons.
