Adding a play/pause button to embedded gifs

I'm not sure if this is a question related to wpDiscuz add-ons or to the core commenting system itself.

I would like to see a new feature added which would detect when someone pastes the url to a gif image into a comment and render only the first frame, while adding a play/pause button overlay, as is seen on many sites these days.

On my site, it's not uncommon for some discussion pages to have multiple embedded gifs, some of which are north of 10Mb in size. That's an awful lot of frames to pre-load, causing the page load speed to really bog down. If the gifs only play on command, the load process should speed up and site efficiency should improve significantly.

Is there anybody else who would like to see this feature, and is this the proper forum to make this feature request?

Cheers,

DM

Hi,

The Tenor GIFs Integration and Giphy Integration addons have "Autoplay GIF animations on comments" options. You can disable it.

Hi @astgh

Thank you for your reply. I am aware of the Tenor GIFs and Giphy Integration, but aren't those only for gifs hosted on those specific sites? I'm talking about someone copying and pasting the url of a gif (as they would with a jpg or png file) into their comment and having the system first recognize that it's a gif file type, and then use the equivalent of a player app to allow users to start and stop the gif at will. Obviously we have players for audio and various video formats that are implemented when an mp3 sound file or a mov or mp4 video file is linked to in a comment. The system recognizes the file type and displays it using the appropriate player while giving users control over starting and stopping playback.

Cheers.
